Back in 1990, Croote was involved with the law, but this time as a victim. His father Michael, a soldier stationed in Georgia, shot and killed Adam's mother Wendy, who was six months pregnant. After a custody battle between his grandparents, Croote's maternal grandparents kidnapped him, changed his name and moved to Kansas.
UPDATE -- 23-year-old Adam Croote has been in trouble with the law before. In 2005, he was convicted of a sexual offense in Massachusetts, leading to his registration as a sex offender.

Three years later, the FBI tracked him down, arrested his grandparents, and moved him back to Westerlo to live with his maternal grandmother. She became an advocate for missing children, and the two of them were in the Oval Office when then-President Bill Clinton signed an executive order mandating that federal buildings allow space to post missing child notices.
