Domestic violence is on the rise in Shawnee County

·

The number of cases coming across Taylor's desk is growing. "Our year to date projections total is going to be an increase of about 80 percent for the domestic battery cases that we filed," Taylor said.

"I remember curling up in a ball to protect her from the kicks," domestic violence survivor, Claudine Dombrowski, described.

Claudine Dombrowski is a survivor to domestic violence, a cycle she went back to many times. "I had a choice I could see my daughter or I could never see her again. The abuser had complete control, so I got my daughter back and went back to him."

Claudine fights to help women like herself who have fallen in the hands of abuse. "This was the crow bar, and then I was beaten and raped," Dombrowski said.

She said she never reported her beatings until after her daughter was born.

Claudine said even if you haven't been a victim, you probably know someone who has and you can help them. "Don't think it's you...get rid of the scarlet letter of shame, it's the most important thing."

Taylor's office gave us statisitics on Domestic Violence in
he DA's office received 1267 cases, out of those 508 were filed. Starting from January 1st until October 16
there have been 1347 cases received, and out of those 849 cases have been filed.
meaning an eighty percent increase on Domestic Battery.

Letters From A War Zone: A Battered Wife Survives

·

The clarity of the survivor is chilling. Once she breaks out of the prison of terror and violence in which she has been nearly destroyed, a process that takes years, it is very difficult to lie to her or to manipulate her.

She sees through the social strategies that have controlled her as a woman, the sexual strategies that have reduced her to a shadow of her own native possibilities. She knows that her life depends on never being taken in by romantic illusion or sexual hallucination.

The emotional severity of the survivor appears to others, even those closest to her, to be cold and unyielding, ruthless in its intensity. She knows too much about suffering to try to measure it when it is real, but she despises self-pity.

She is self-protective, not out of arrogance, but because she has been ruined by her own fragility. Like Anya, the survivor of the Nazi concentration camps in Susan Fromberg Schaeffer’s beautiful novel of the same name, she might say:

"So what have I learned?

I have learned not to believe in suffering. It is a form of death.

If it is severe enough it is a poison; it kills the emotions." She knows that some of her own emotions have been killed and she distrusts those who are infatuated with suffering, as if it were a source of life, not death.

In her heart she is a mourner for those who have not survived.

In her soul she is a warrior for those who are now as she was then.

In her life she is both celebrant and proof of women’s capacity and will to survive, to become, to act, to change self and society.

And each year she is stronger and there are more of her.

A Battered Wife Survives
TAKE BACK THE DAY

Part III

Andrea Dworkin
by

This essay is now ten years old. Wife-beating is the most commonly committed violent crime in the United States, according to the FBI. In New Hampshire, I meet eighteen-year-old women who work in a battered women’s shelter. One talks about how she feels when women decide to go home and she has to drive them. In Toronto, I meet two women who travel through rural Canada in the dead of winter to find and help battered women. In a project called "Off the Beaten Path," Susan Faupel is walking 600 miles–from Chicago, Illinois, to Little Rock, Arkansas–for battered women. In a southern state, I am driven to the airport by an organizer of the rally I have just spoken at; the car keeps veering off the road as she says she is being battered now; when? I keep asking; now, now, she says; she has gone to the organizing meetings for the antipornography demonstrations with make-up covering the bruises on her face. In the South especially I meet lesbians, married with children, who are being beaten by their husbands–afraid to leave because they would lose their children, battered because they are lesbian. In Seattle, I find safe houses, secret from most feminists, for women being beaten by their women lovers. In small towns where there are no shelters, especially in the North and Midwest, I find safe houses organized like an underground railroad for women escaping battery.

Celebrating misogyny and government payments for the subjugation of women and children. Calling it "Equality"

There needs to be a bog overhaul on fairness not being identical to sameness.

Rise in single fathers defies historic trend

More growth in single dads than in single moms in last decade

There are now about 47,200 single-father households in the state, an increase of nearly 6,000 over 2000, or 14 percent. The number of families led by single mothers increased by about 5,000 over the past 10 years, or 3.2 percent.

Though just 22 percent of single-parent households in Maryland are led by men, the data suggest more parity than ever before. Experts attribute the change to a more flexible court system where joint-custody arrangements are far more common, and to broader career options for women.

Maryland legislature fails victims of domestic violence Maryland General Assembly fails to make it easier for women to seek protection after non-physical abuse

·

Amplify’d from www.baltimoresun.com

This is not the first time the Maryland legislature has neglected to expand domestic violence laws. You might remember Amy Castillo, the Montgomery County woman who, in the middle of a custody dispute with her estranged husband, was denied a protective order due to the rigid standard of proof of domestic abuse. At a particularly volatile moment in their failed relationship, Ms. Castillo's husband took their three children to a hotel in Baltimore and drowned them. It was a sickening headline across the country, and it cried out for some measure to be taken to try to stop it from ever happening again. But even the wrenching testimony of Amy Castillo would not convince the legislature that changes to Maryland's domestic violence laws are overdue.

It seems we have a high standard of proof in Maryland for what constitutes domestic violence. It's a high standard that nevertheless puts us in low company: the dwindling number of states that don't recognize a wrecked TV or a destroyed room as an indicator of escalating abuse — a big hint that physical harm could be next. And now, with the legislative session just ended, those who represent the people of Maryland have declined to do anything about it.

By Maryland's narrow definition of abuse, you may not. It virtually all cases, it will take more than destroyed property, incessant and harassing text messages, or even your abuser coming to your home uninvited to convince a judge that you deserve the protection of the state.

What would you do if your spouse punched out your television? What if he (or she) threw a table across the room and it smashed to pieces against the wall in a fit of rage? Even if you weren't touched during this episode of violence and intimidation, aren't you a victim of it? Do you deserve protection?

Taunton Police Department patch

A city man and his live-in female companion have lost custody of their three children after police charged them with beating their high school-age daughter last Saturday.

Taunton —
A city man and his live-in female companion have lost

Joao Andrade, 38, of 5 Powers Ave., was released after posting $5,000 bail at his arraignment Wednesday in Taunton District Court on two counts of assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, a shod foot.

The girl went to the principal’s office with paperwork from Morton Hospital and Medical Center, where she had been treated Sunday night, explaining why she was absent from school Monday, police were told.

The victim told authorities her stepmother began the assault Saturday afternoon as the girl was cleaning the bathroom. The girl told police Montrond threw her to the floor by her hair.

Andrade allegedly then rushed in and kicked his daughter “several times” in the face and back, according to the police report.

It wasn’t until her grandfather intervened that the assault ended, the girl told police.

The next day, Sunday, Andrade reportedly wanted to bring the girl to the hospital because of the swelling to her face, but Montrond objected, according to the police report.

On Monday, the girl stayed home from school because of her condition and finally was brought to Morton Hospital at 9:30 p.m. by her father, who reportedly was concerned that she might have internal bleeding, according to the police report.

Andrade allegedly told the emergency room doctor his daughter had been kicked in the face while playing soccer with one of her brothers. But when questioned Tuesday morning by school personnel, she told them she had fallen off a horse.

It wasn’t until police interviewed her at school that she acknowledged the assault.

At just 5 weeks old, twins Tyler and Savannah were victims of a savage beating that ended their lives, tore a family apart and subsequently landed their father in prison
"I thought it was just me that made him angry," she said.
Bird-Winbun claims that the cycle of abuse that left her children dead started before they were even born, although she hasnt always known that.
What most people don't know or understand is that violence can turn to homicide overnight,
said that child abuse can escalate quickly. She said she is telling her story in hopes of helping to end child abuse once and for all. She said she doesn't want what happened to her children to happen to others.
"I can only say to people who say I never should have left Tyler and Savannah with him, that they are absolutely correct," said Bird-Winbun.

Robert Church was never angry at anyone, according to his neighbors. Provided by Kenneth Eiland

But on Saturday, Ward arrived at Church's trailer home with just a gun in his hand, according to the Clay County Sheriff's Office.

Ward, 49, of Lawtey then pointed the revolver at his wife, Netty Sue Ward, who had recently told Ward she was leaving him, authorities said. But instead of firing at her, Ward turned the gun and shot himself in the head.

He said he thinks Ward "just couldn't handle" his wife's decision to move back in with Church.

It was the second murder-suicide this year in the Green Cove Springs area.

Neighbors of Clay County resident Robert Church said Sunday his tangled history with Gary Ward — Church's ex-wife later married Ward — had not shown any signs of ill will or confrontations over the years.

Murder-suicide ultimate form of control

Men who are driven to murder-suicide are obsessed and controlling, leading them to take drastic measures when women decide to leave, experts in domestic violence say

Crime scene tape

“The perpetrator thinks and believes he cannot live without her and he will not,” said Nancy Barton, executive director of Sistercare, which provides services for battered women in the Midlands. “He has got to have her, and you see this picture of real intense, constant jealousy. It’s ‘I’ve got to have her, and I’ll have her in death.’”

For years, South Carolina has ranked in the top 10 in the country in domestic violence rates, said Rebecca Williams-Agee of the S.C. Coalition Against Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault.

The most common characteristics of murder-suicide in families are a prior history of domestic violence, access to guns, increased, specific threats and a prior history of poor mental health or substance abuse, according to the National Institute of Justice, which researches crime for the U.S. Department of Justice.

“The perpetrator has lost all control and is just trying to regain it and doesn’t care anymore,” she said.

The most dangerous time for a woman is when she decides to leave the relationship, Williams-Agee said.

Almost all cases of murder-suicide have prior incidents of domestic violence, experts said.

When love turns ugly

Crime Statistics and Research report says the rate of domestic assault increased by 40 per cent in Sydney and more than 50 per cent statewide between 1997 and 2004. The economy can also play a role. Suzanne Dubbs, an executive director of the Jeanne Geiger Crisis Centre, a US domestic violence group, said: ''Bad economic times do not create batterers but they do exacerbate problems. And women who are lying in the dark at night, thinking about leaving, they have no idea how they'll support themselves and their kids on their own.''

Obsessive love lost: why some fathers kill

·

Custody issues are not the main reason estranged fathers kill their children.

They kill to punish their wives for leaving them.

Come with Daddy
explored murder-suicides after marital separation.

Dr Johnson said the kind of men who kill in these situations are those with a proprietorial attitude towards women and children.

They will not relinquish control, they are used to calling the shots in the family, and are often pathologically jealous. When they finally realise their wives are not coming back, they turn lethal.

''Homicide-suicide is their final act of control,'' she said. ''Very often they let their wives survive to experience the extreme pain of losing their children.''

Basy Barrera cut Kari Baker’s hair for 13 years before Baker was murdered in 2006.

Now Barrera is one of many who are donating goods and services in a unique fundraising effort to help Baker’s parents pay legal expenses in their battle for custody of their granddaughters, Grace and Kensi.

“I just feel very close to that family,” said Barrera, who also styles the hair of Baker’s mother, two of her aunts and one of her nephews. “I would do anything to help them, especially help them get those girls. I miss Kari and I hope her parents get the girls because that is what Kari would have wanted. That is why they are doing all the things they have done.”

Baker’s parents, James and Linda Dulin, who live in Woodway, never believed that their 31-year-old daughter, a teacher, committed suicide, as her April 2006 death initially was ruled.

They convinced Hewitt officials to reopen the investigation and filed a civil lawsuit alleging that Kari Baker’s husband, Central Texas Baptist minister Matt Baker, killed her so he could be with his mistress.

Dr. Phil: Stats show that in Domestic Violence Families children are abused 50% times more often than non Domestic Violence Families. So Why Are We giving Abusers and Pedophiles and killer daddy's custody of these same children?

Amplify’d from www.drphil.com

Steve Burdo is the lead advocacy consultant for the Center for Judicial Excellence. “Women are just not being believed or listened to in family court, where the majority of these cases are being tried,” he says. “Oftentimes, they are being blamed and punished. Only in family court do we see a situation where the victim is the person who has to present the case against the abuser. If it’s in criminal court, it would be a DA or a prosecutor who would present the case for the victim, but if a woman is the victim of domestic violence, and can’t afford an attorney, then she has to go into court and present that case, and it’s extremely intimidating facing your abuser in the first place, but being able to go about the more technical or litigious aspects of presenting a case. In our criminal courts, we will make sure that our most heinous murderers have adequate legal representation. However, a mother who’s trying to protect herself or her child and can’t afford an attorney in family court, she’s thrown to the courts like a lamb to the slaughter.”

“How do we change that?” Dr. Phil asks.

“We need to completely rethink the way we handle domestic violence cases, and that means having all the right people involved, not just the legislators, not just the courts,” Steve says. “You need a domestic violence community, you need domestic violence victims at that table, talking about how to change the way we handle these cases, and it’s something that’s just not happening right now.”

“It doesn’t seem to me, from my involvement in this, that we have all the entities communicating,” Dr. Phil says. “If CPS is involved, a criminal court may not know that. If there’s a custody battle, CPS may assume that the family court is looking at this, so they’re not going to start an investigation, because they think it would be redundant, when in fact they might have resources that the family court doesn’t have, particularly with our budget cuts. Why do we not have family court, criminal court people talking to each other?”

“With the hundreds of calls we get each month at the Center for Judicial Excellence, our experience is that we see it’s more of an issue of CPS not communicating with the family courts,” Steve says. “When CPS is investigating allegations of abuse, and they see that there’s a custody dispute also, they will just close the case as inconclusive. It’ll then go to the family courts. The family courts will look at it and go, ‘Oh, this was closed as inconclusive. There’s no abuse,’ and they’ll just take that as a final verdict.”

Estrada's lawyer argued the children's father, Riley Choate, started intimidating his children's mother in 2005 after he won custody of their two kids.

Aimee Estrada's attorney filed an emergency motion May 13, so the estranged mother could regain custody of Christina Choate, the Times of Northwest Indiana reports.

According to court documents, Kubina-Choate's brother, Robert Hamby, told Estrada's husband over the phone that Christina accused her father of killing her brother

Authorities found a body buried in a shallow grave May 4 near the family's former home in a mobile park in the Black Oak section of Gary.

Choate and Kubina-Choate face murder charges for the 13-year-old boy's death.

KITCHENER — A young man who had asked not to be left alone with his infant daughter was sentenced Monday to the equivalent of eight years in prison for shaking her to death.

Sean Summers, 20, pleaded guilty to manslaughter while caring for four-month-old Kayleigh Ingram-Summers in his rented basement bedroom on Houghton Street in Cambridge last July.

“It’s all about trying to get back at Kaitlyn and Kayleigh bore the cost of that with her life,” she said.

But it was clear Summers, recently unemployed and living on his own after graduating from Jacob Hespeler Secondary School, had said he didn’t want to look after the infant on his own.

As a result, there was an agreement in which Ingram, who lived with her parents and had primary care of Kayleigh, was supposed to supervise his visits.

Ahhh the poor poor widdle Jill Dykes was a scaredy cat. She thinks that there are many angry bloggers out there ready to attack her? I mean seriously why else did she leave court today after stabbing Claudine through the heart and not allowing Rikki to come home to her mom. How many moms out there have said no you cannot call your dad or no you cannot go visit him and NOT been threatened with Jail? I know LT was not only threatened with it but she was thrown in jail. Danielle Malmquist has also been thrown in jail.

Oh!!!!! I had a serious brain fart!!!! The pisshead JD was scared of little ol' Claudine? Nah you can't be serious Petunia. What could Claudine do even if she wanted to? Halleck Richardson has made damn sure she will never be able to work another day in her life, he has hired men to rape her, has hired women to beat her, and now he continues his abuse of her by now allowing a mother and daughter to have contact. He also has the criminal conviction record to prove all of this.
And let's not forget Don Hoffman and his snot nosed son Jason P. Hoffman. Hell has a special place for these two when they go.

And the winner of the day goes to the very UN esteemed Judge David Debenham. He is the one who yet again would not hold Daddy dearest responsible and allow Claudine and Rikki to reconnect as mother and daughter. And the pisser in all of this? He took Claudine's cell phone away from her. I guess the DYKES bitch thought Claudine would call all of her big bad ass blogger friends. Guess what DYKES? The Internet is more powerful than you, whinehead Hoffman, snot nosed brat Hoffman and woman-beater, wife raping child stealing Halleck Richardson and all the GAL's who want to side with widdle ol' scaredy cat Jill Dykes (Yes you Renee). We will prevail. You cannot keep this mother and daughter apart forever. Rikki will be 18 one day and then your little circus will go up in flames. But we shall continue to hope it does not take that long.
